Planning a destination wedding is exciting, but choosing the right photographer to capture it can feel very overwhelming. Don’t worry… I have a little insight for you.

As a Nashville-based photographer who travels for weddings and offers to make the trip to capture your big day, I’ve put together the questions I think every couple should ask before booking. I know it always makes my couple and myself much more comfortable after having those conversations so there is no confusion or misunderstanding beforehand. Let’s dig in!

#1 Do you have experience traveling for weddings?

Destination weddings come with variables a local wedding doesn’t: unfamiliar lighting, tricky timelines, language barriers, even different legal requirements for photography at certain venues. Ask to see galleries from weddings your photographer has shot outside their home city. Experience traveling matters as much as talent behind the camera.

#2 What’s included in your travel fee?

Every photographer handles this differently. Some charge a flat travel fee that covers flights, lodging, and ground transportation. Others itemize everything separately. Get this in writing up front so there are no surprises later — and ask what happens if your wedding date requires them to arrive a day early or stay a day late.

#3 Do you have a backup plan?

Flights get delayed. Weather happens. Ask what your photographer’s contingency plan is if they can’t make it to your destination on time. A seasoned destination wedding photographer should have a clear answer, whether that’s building in buffer travel days or having a trusted second shooter on standby.

#4 How soon do you book, and how far in advance should I reach out?

Destination weddings often require securing travel logistics months in advance. Ask about your photographer’s booking timeline and when payments or deposits are due relative to your wedding date.

#5 Can I see a full gallery from a destination wedding, not just highlights?

Highlight reels look great, but a full gallery tells you how consistently a photographer delivers across an entire day — different lighting conditions, indoor and outdoor moments, and unscripted candids.

#6 What’s your approach to scouting an unfamiliar location?

Ask whether they do a site visit, request drone or ground shots from the venue in advance, or rely on real-time scouting the day of. This affects how confidently they can plan your timeline and locations for portraits.
